PICKit Board Features
The board has 3 sockets, one for 8, 14 and 20-pin PIC microcontrollers, one for 28-pin and one for 40-pin. As well as power and clock circuitry, all ports are brought out to pin headers for easy connection of included keypad and LCD and other accessories or your own prototypes. It has 8 switches and LEDs and also supports UART, I2C EEPROMs and ADC circuits.
The PIC16F887 and PIC18F4221 microcontrollers included in the kit both fit into the 40-pin socket. PIC16F887 is the recommended replacement for the popular PIC16F877A.
MPLAB and PICkit3 Programmer and Debugger
MPLAB X is an excellent development environment with editor, assembler, C compilers and simulator all built-in making writing PIC code really simple. The PICkit3 programmer and debugger supplied can be run directly from MPLAB environment allowing you to single step through your code and watch the changes for easy debugging.
It also operates as a programmer for loading the PIC microcontroller with your finished code, and this can be run from MPLAB or from the dedicated programming software, which is easier and quicker for production programming.
