Kanda has added a new portable PIC microcontroller programmer to their handheld programmer range. Unlike the standard Kanda handheld PIC programmers and other units available, it can store up to 32 different programs and has a keypad and LCD to make it easy to select the correct program.
This portable programmer is loaded from the PC using the loader software and USB interface supplied. All of the 32 “slots” are 256KB in size and they can be loaded with different target information, including different PIC microcontrollers, code and data, configuration bytes, programming voltage, programming method and slot title. Once it is loaded, it can be used anywhere, the ultimate standalone PIC programmer.
The programmer can power a target circuit at 3.3V or 5V or the target can be powered. It has a rechargeable battery and is fitted with a charging socket. The 15V power supply included will charge the battery. Programming can still be carried out when the unit is charging so power is always available. Plug it into your target board and use the keypad to scroll through the program list to select the right program or enter a program number, then press the Program Button. Programming progress and results are displayed on the LCD. That’s it, your target is updated!
The PIC portable programmer is ideal for
- Production technicians who need to customise products or deal with different product lines
- Software developers who need to try various firmware versions on site
- Service engineers who have to service a range of equipment
- Maintenance engineers who need to update the firmware in different machinery
Its small size, flexibility and ease of use make it ideal for firmware upgrades in difficult environments and it is a great alternative to taking a laptop and separate programmer on site.
The loader software supports Windows including 64-bit version Windows 8.1, with a USB interface for connecting the programmer included. It has a power supply (wall transformer) for charging the 9V battery, and is fitted with low battery and charging LEDs. The target connector is a 6-way flying lead ICSP connector and the programmer itself is only 125 x 70 x 25mm (4.8 x 2.6 x 1 inches) in size and weighs less than 200g (0.4Lbs). RJ11 (ICD2 type) convertors are available separately, if you need this connector type. Most PIC16F and PIC18F microcontrollers are supported.
Kanda are manufacturers and distributors of tools for electronic engineers and trainers. Products include microcontroller and PLD training kits, programmers, cables and embedded modules. PC interfaces for CAN Bus, Bluetooth, USB and ZigBee wireless.
