I’m looking to build a web app that displays temperature data from the PIC16F877A. I know that the Arduino (thru a shield) or Raspberry Pi can readily connect to the internet and I may use either of them instead. But I want to do it using the PIC16F877A since I am more familiar with it. It’s also cheaper. Any thoughts on how to connect it to the internet?
To connect to Internet your microcontroller needs a TCP/IP stack. Although there is one freely available from Microchip, it is too big to run on a PIC16F887A. This means that you need an external module to do the connection.
By the way, the PIC16F887 is pin and code compatible with the PIC16F887A an is a quarter of the price.
