ZigBee Products
ZigBee is a wireless transmission protocol designed to make it easy to create control and monitoring networks. It is defined by a standard and has lots of benefits for industrial use over other wireless protocols like Bluetooth. If you need lots of nodes, low data rates, a robust network, battery powered sensors and flexibility in adding or removing nodes then look at ZigBee products.
A ZigBee network forms a mesh with multiple routes for each signal, just like the Internet. Signals can travel on different paths depending on setup, traffic and faults. A network has one coordinator that controls the system and has lots of routers that can both collect data and transmit it. End points form the useful part of the network.
An endpoint collects and transmits data to a router. They can have ADC, digital I/O or RS232 interfaces to allow a wide variety of sensors or control units to be connected. They are often battery powered and can be placed in sleep mode most of the time to lower power consumption.
ZigBee networks have much slower data rates than WiFi or Bluetooth so are not good for high volume data transmission like video. However, it does have many advantages over them including,
- New devices can join network in under 30mS
- ZigBee network can have up to 64K devices
- Low power consumption especially of end nodes
- Long range, typically 100m with standard antenna
- End points can have a wide range of sensors fitted
- Nodes can be removed or added to the network on the fly
Sena ZigBee products include ZigBee USB dongle, ZigBee serial adapters and embedded ZigBee modules. Most systems use a USB dongle as the coordinator and either the serial adapters or embedded modules as end-points or routers. All these units can be configured by the you in the setup software to be any type, coordinator, router or end point.
ZigBee is the ideal solution for applications like building and home control, industrial control and sensor networks. A coordinator can be connected to a PC via USB or an Ethernet network and the whole system can be setup and managed by simple control software, using AT commands.
